Gypaète barbu / Bearded vulture - a photo on Flickriver

            Cette espèce rare a été quasiment éteinte dans les montagnes françaises car persécutées à cause de croyances erronnées liées à la méconnaissance et à sa très grande envergure d'environ 2.8 m (décrivant cet oiseau comme responsable de prédations de moutons ou même d'enfants ...). Il a été réintroduit à partir de souches étrangères. Il est très susceptible au dérangement essentiellement humain. Il atteint sa maturité sexuelle tardivement (7 ans) et a un faible taux de reproduction. En période de nidification (dans des falaises abruptes), de larges zones de non dérangement sont mises en place autour du nid pour permettre à la reproduction d'aller jusqu'à l'envol des jeune à la fin de l'été. En cas de dérangement, le gypaete abandonne le nid ... Il se nourrit quasiment exclusivement d'os pouvant être ingérés juqu'à 20 cm ... les os plus grands sont jetés sur des pierres pour les casser. L'individu phtographié a té pris en photo hors de la zone de non dérangement à 2600 m d'altitude environ. / This rare species was almost extinct in the French mountains because of persecution due to erroneous beliefs linked to ignorance and its very large wingspan of about 2.8 m (describing this bird as responsible for predation of sheep or even children ...). It was reintroduced from foreign strains. It is very susceptible to disturbance, mainly human. It reaches sexual maturity late (7 years) and has a low reproductive rate. During the nesting period (in steep cliffs), large non-disturbance zones are set up around the nest to allow reproduction to continue until the young fledge at the end of summer. In the event of disturbance, the bearded vulture abandons the nest ... It feeds almost exclusively on bones that can be ingested up to 20 cm ... larger bones are thrown onto stones to break them. The photographed individual was taken outside the non-disturbance zone at an altitude of approximately 2600 m.
