A fortified manor house rather than a fortress, Compton Castle has been home to the Gilbert family for almost 600 years. First built around 1320 after Joan de Compton married Geoffrey Gilbert, the house was strengthened around 1500–1520 with battlements, towers and a gatehouse, giving the striking façade we see today. This is the childhood home of Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539–1583), half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh, who famously claimed St John’s, Newfoundland, for Elizabeth I in 1583, often described as England’s first overseas colony.

After leaving the Gilbert family in the eighteenth century, the house fell into decline, but was bought back by Commander Walter Raleigh Gilbert in 1930–31 and carefully restored. Since 1951 it has been in the care of the National Trust, with the family still living here. Inside are a reconstructed medieval great hall and a charming knot and rose garden. From the drive, the gatehouse and towers rise dramatically, a perfect subject for architectural photography. Compton Castle is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument.
