N608AS ¦ RYN 17.10.1995

Constellation N608AS made another sorry appearance at the Ryan Field boneyard when seen more than ten years after having been withdrawn from use, with all useful parts removed, and seemingly now home to a flock of birds.

Built for the USAF as 48-0608, it was converted to VIP VC-121B while still on the production line, and delivered in November 1948. It was named "Dewdrop", for the anticipated win by presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey, but when Harry S. Truman won, he kept his VC-118 (DC-6), and 48-0608 was therefore flying other VIP missions for the USAF. It was stored at Davis Monthan in 1968, and after removal of the interior furnishings, became a C-121B again.

In 1971 it was sold to the civil market as N608AS, and out of several owners, the main operator was Aircraft Specialties Corporation, who used the Connie as a sprayer, with regular stints in Canada to help out during the budworm spraying season. In 1986 it was withdrawn from use at Ryan Field, and in 1990 was acquired by Harry Oliver, who was involved in restoring historic aircraft and used it as a source of spares for the restoration of sistership N9463/48-0610 "Columbine II" in 1989. N608AS was eventually fully broken-up at Ryan in early 2002.
