Founded as a subsidiary of Westdeutsche Luftwerbung Theodor Wüllenkemper GmbH in 1974, WDL Flugdienst became the Group's commercial aviation division and one of the larger German airlines. In 1991 the carrier was renamed WDL Aviation, operating a fair number of Fokker 27s on cargo services, and BAe.146s on wet-lease operations.

Included in the fleet was F.27-600 D-AELJ, which was captured basking in the morning sun on its Foxtrott stand after arriving on a cargo charter from Cologne earlier in the morning.

D-AELJ was built in 1967, and flew in Libya, Belgium and France before joining WDL in June 1995. In 2010 the Fokker was withdrawn from use and parked at Cologne airport, and recent reports suggest it is still in storage at Cologne.
