Rosa sp.

            The rose belongs to the genus Rosa and the rose family Rosaceae. It is one of the most well known ornamental plants in the world and has been deliberately cultivated for centuries. There are many wild species and countless cultivated varieties that differ in shape, color and fragrance. Typical features are the pinnate leaves and the thorns on the stem. Depending on the variety, roses bloom once a year or several times in a season. The flowers range in color from white through yellow and pink to deep red. After pollination the flowers develop into rose hips, the fruit of the rose, which are edible and contain a high amount of vitamin C. Roses are valued not only as cut flowers but also in perfume production and in symbolism.
