Prince Arthur's chantry in Worcester Cathedral

            The tomb of Arthur, prince of Wales, eldest son of Henry VII and elder brother of Henry VIII. The tomb, encased in a chantry chapel, is located in Worcester Cathedral.  It is placed to the right of the High Altar (when facing east).

Arthur died at Ludlow castle on 2nd April 1502. His body lay in state for three weeks and then brought for burial in Worcester. Heraldic symbols are carved in the south façade of the chantry chapel, including the Tudor rose, the Order of the Garter, the badge of the pomegranate (the symbol of Arthur’s wife, Katherine of Aragon), the arms of England and Arthur’s own coat of arms. The chantry chapel remained intact until the reign of Edward VI (1547-1553), when several statues of saints were mutilated after being deemed idolatrous by the authorities. Aside from this the tomb remains fairly undamaged, although the colours of the actual tomb within the chapel have naturally faded over the years.
