The Hours of Richard III - a photo on Flickriver

This Book of Hours, made around 1420, was acquired by Richard III shortly after the death of his son and wife. He personalised the book by adding devotions on blank pages (ff. 1, 181-84), and entering his birth date in the calendar. The page here (f. 15r) shows an initial with the scene of the Annunciation within.

This book was allegedly discovered in Richard’s tent at Bosworth in 1485, shortly after the king had been slain by the army of Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. It was passed on to Henry’s mother, Margaret Beaufort. In the 1540s and 1550s it was rebound and cropped in the workshop of King Edward (IV) and Queen Mary (I) Binder. It is now in the part of the collection of Lambeth Palace Library, having been acquired by either Archbishop Bancroft or Archbishop Abbot.

The book is currently on display at the exhibit, Treasures from the Collection of the Archbishops of Canterbury at the Lambeth Palace Library.
