Richard III’s entry of his birth date in his Book of Hours

            This Book of Hours, made around 1420, was acquired by Richard III shortly after the death of his son and wife. He personalised the book by adding devotions on blank pages (ff. 1, 181-84), and entering his birth date in the calendar (seen here). By 2nd October he has added  Hac die nat erat Richardus Rex Anglie iijus apud Foderingay anno domini Mcc[cclij].

This book was allegedly discovered in Richard’s tent at Bosworth in 1485, shortly after the king had been slain by the army of Henry VII, the first monarch of the Tudor dynasty. It was passed on to Henry’s mother, Margaret Beaufort. In the 1540s and 1550s it was rebound and cropped in the workshop of King Edward (IV) and Queen Mary (I) Binder. It is now in the part of the collection of Lambeth Palace Library, having been acquired by either Archbishop Bancroft or Archbishop Abbot.

The book is currently on display at the exhibit, Treasures from the Collection of the Archbishops of Canterbury at the Lambeth Palace Library.
