The sitter’s identity is unknown. He appears to be wearing clerical clothing dating to the 1530s, which narrows down the list of individuals at Henry VIII’s court. Susan Foister in Holbein in England (London, 2006), states that ‘it is tempting to speculate that the sitter might be Stephen Gardiner (c.1495/8-1555), Bishop of Winchester’ though ‘from 1535-8 he was absent on a diplomatic mission to France’ (p. 57). Still there remains the possibility if we accept the early date of c.1532.

Another possibility – could it be Edward Lee, archbishop of York (Thomas Wolsey’s successor)? He was certainly at court throughout this time and of an established enough position to have sat for Holbein. In 1533, of example, he was in the capital to participate in Anne Boleyn’s coronation festivities.
