This Day in History - John Brown Hanged on December 2, 1859

While looking thorough our stereo card collection for examples by a New York state photographer I found two cards by S. R. Stoddard of Glens Falls, NY. One is a copy of a portrait of John Brown and the other is a photograph of his grave site on his farm in North Elba, New York.

As an abolitionist Brown has been called both a freedom fighter/hero and "American's first domestic terrorist".

This stereo card by Stoddard is a copy of a salt print reproduction of a daguerreotype of Brown. It obviously has extensive retouched.

Now if I can just stop hearing the music from "John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave" in my head....
