The Capitol, Richmond, Virginia - a photo on Flickriver

Thomas Jefferson was asked to design a new Capitol building for Virginia in 1785 while he was serving in France as the top envoy of the newly independent United States. Breaking with the British-style Georgian architecture that had dominated in the English-speaking parts of North America, he based his design on a Roman temple built in southern France in the 1st Century BC. Virginia's Capitol was the first public building in the New World constructed in the Classical Revival style and would become the prototype for public buildings throughout the new United States.
