Bend in the River near McGrath - a photo on Flickriver

            The mighty Kuskokwim looks frozen but underneath is a steady stream. While we lived in McGrath several people drove their snowmobiles into holes in the ice and were recovered downstream months later, long dead. The river is a dynamic force in shaping the landscape. Look at the accreting side of the river and you will see a pattern of zonation in the vegetation. Willows dominate near the river in fast-draining soils with lots of sun exposure. The darker interior is a black spruce forest with some white spruce in better drained localities.
