I have always found shots using a white background to be very clean and elegant. Unfortunately, I have never tried to do it…for a variety of reasons (not enough flashes, no white background, etc). The Zach Arias white seamless tutorial (www.zarias.com/?p=71) has been very popular here and it got me kind of motivated to see if I could get a similar look without the studio space, studio strobes, and bi-fold doors.

I broke down and picked up some white seamless paper from Photomark in Phoenix and built a background support using some PVC tubing, chain, and hooks. Fortunately, I found the ceiling joists without too much trouble.

Strobist Info: For the shot, I used 4 speedlights (Two SB-600s, one SB-28, and a Vivitar 285). The SB-600s were pointed at the background and flagged using a cardboard flag wrapped in black duct tape and attached using some DIY speedstraps (a la David Hobby www.flickr.com/photos/davidhobby/2710931734/). The main light was an SB-28 in an Amvona soft box that I modified to work with a speedlight. I also used a bare Vivitar 285 (thanks Manny) as a rim light. The Vivitar was also flagged using a cardboard flag wrapped with gaffer’s tape (I’m official now, I own gaffer’s tape). I used my new Sekonic L-358 to meter the light...the main light metered f/9.0 and the reading from the back of her head (light from BG) also metered f/9.0. However, for some unknown reason, you will notice from the EXIF data that I shot this one at f/10.
