West Coast Hotel - Cooktown, Qld - 1884

Given its nature as a supply port for the Palmer River gold fields, the 'Wild-West' settlement of Cooktown boasted by 1880 more than 30 licensed hotels; add to that the sly grog shops, brothels and opium dens, the diggers would have had plenty of places to booze and brawl. 

Established in 1873, this timber verandahed hotel is one of three surviving hotels from that era; the others being the Commercial Hotel (1884) and the Sovereign Hotel. It is reputedly named after the area on New Zealand's South Island from where some prospective miners had travelled from an earlier gold rush ( West Coast Gold Rush between 1864 and 1867), although others suggest that it was named after the area around Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania which had also seen a gold rush in 1881. Given that the Tasmanian gold rush took place after the NZ one, I am more inclined to agree with the NZ links to this pub.
