H-21/CH-21 Shawnee, U. S. Army (02040), Fort Rucker, Alabama, U. S. Army Aviation Museum

            CH-21 Shawnee was developed in 1950 and was commonly known as the "Flying Banana."  In 1954, the Shawnee became the first rotary aircraft to fly non-stop coast to coast, refueled mid-air by a U-1A Otter.  The CH-21 Shawnee was used in Vietnam beginning in 1962. The CH-21 Shawnee served as a light troop transport capable of carrying twenty troops, or 2,300 pounds of cargo. The CH-21 was in service from 1950 until 1967 when it was replaced by the UH-1 Iroquois and the CH-47 Chinook. (Source: U.S. Army Transportation Museum)
