Shirley Temple League club badge (1930's)

The Shirley Temple League children’s club was sponsored by the Sunday Referee, a weekly newspaper. It’s figurehead, ‘Uncle Oliver’ would visit seaside town resorts on pre-advertised dates and give prizes to children he met wearing their club badge. No doubt many prizes were given out at these events as this was a very popular club, especially amongst the girls. The badges are not too difficult to come by but are especially hard to find in very good condition.

Shirley Temple (born 1928) was probably the most famous child actress of the 20th century who was at the height of her fame during the 1930s. She had a huge following that included clubs worldwide, together with a vast amount of merchandising that continued long after she retired from films. Shirley Temple fan clubs still exist today but the 1930s was their golden era.

The image used on this badge was adapted from Shirley’s iconic photo used to promote her film ‘Curley Top’ which was released in 1935 when only 7 years of age. It’s rather difficult to reproduce a detailed image on an enamel badge and as a result the image looks much older. It was also in this film she sung the hit song ‘animal crackers in my soup’.

The Sunday Referee was founded in 1877 as a national weekend newspaper whose title disappeared in 1939 when it merged with the Sunday Chronicle. The Referee’s circulation peaked during the 1930s with well over 350,000 editions sold on each Sunday.

The badge is made from die-stamped brass, gilded and with two enamels (skin-tone & blue). It measures 1” diameter (25mm approx). This badge was made by Roden of London during the later 1930s.
