The 2nd Baronstown House at Kilbixy, County Westmeath

            The Malone family previously of Athlone acquired the Baronstown demesne at Kilbixy in 1673 and built a modest sized mansion there. This was destroyed by fire and with the insurance money rebuilt it as a much more imposing and larger Palladian style mansion. This was also destroyed by fire in the early 20th century and the third Baronstown house was built on the site. The third house was taken over by the Land Commission in the early 30’s who had the house demolished in 1937. Today, all that remains are the water tower, an icehouse and some outbuildings nearby.
