SAL - SALT

            In Fuencaliente, south of the island of La Palma (La Isla Bonita) are the Salinas. The pink and reddish colors of the water are produced by the Dunaliella Salina algae, a microorganism adapted to hypersaline environments (its reddish coloration protects it from sunlight). The Dunaliella is the food of a small crustacean also capable of surviving in these saline environments, the Artemia salina. Archaea, a primitive bacterium, also contributes to the reddish color of the water. The color passes from the algae to the crustacean and then to the birds, such as the flamingo.

En Fuencaliente, al sur de la isla de La Palma (La Isla Bonita) estan las Salinas. Los colores rosados y rojizos del agua los producen el alga Dunaliella Salina, un microorganismo adaptado a ambientes hipersalinos (su coloracion rojiza le protege de la luz solar). La Dunaliella es el alimento de un pequeño crustaceo capaz tambien de sobrevivir en estos ambientes salinos, la Artemia salina. Tambien contribuye a la coloracion rojiza del agua la Arquea, una bacteria primitiva. El color pasa del alga al crustaceo y luego a las aves , como al flamenco.
