Made In Council Bluffs, Iowa - a photo on Flickriver

            Marked "W. DUNCAN COUNCIL BLUFFS IOWA" on the top flat of the octagon barrel, and "W. DUNCAN" (twice) across the face of the muzzle, this rifle was made by Wilson Duncan.  Duncan is first noted as a gunsmith, in St. Louis, Missouri, in the 1850 census. He was born in New York, in 1833, and was employed in the shop of T. J. Albright (probably as an apprentice). From 1852 to 1854 he was employed by noted western gunmaker, Carlos Gove, in St. Joseph, Buchanon County, Missouri. Duncan subsequently opened his own shop, in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, in 1854.  He remained there through 1857. In 1857 he returned to work for Carlos Gove, who was by then in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  When Carlos Gove moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1862, Wilson Duncan took over his business in Council Bluffs, which he continued until 1913. This rifle probably dates from the 1860's. The caliber is .42, the rifle weighs 10 1/2 pounds.
