Kea - Mountain Parrot - a photo on Flickriver

            Two Kea dropped in to where we were parked off the Te-Anau - Milford Sound Highway 94, near the Homer Tunnel. One was tagged, the other was not.

Kea are one of the few Alpine parrots of the world. Although the ancestors of the Kea were forest dwellers the Kea has become adapted for life in the sub-alpine and alpine zone of the South Island Southern Alps. 

Living above the bushline (1,000m/3,000ft) is quite exceptional for a member of the parrot family.

The Kea is a large parrot about 48 cm (19 in) long and weighing about 1 kg (2.2 lb). Their range covers the South Island Southern Alps as far north as North West Nelson where I have previously encountered this bird in the Mountains.

The Kea is very inquisitive and each night when in the mountains of the South Island we would need to 'Kea-proof' the tent site to avoid damage or loss of items attractive to this bird.

The Kea is a protected bird, classed as Nationally Endangered in the New Zealand Threat Classification Systemand Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List.
