Babbling Brook

This babbling brook is the Wynlass Beck which is a small and short fast flowing stream in Windermere, Cumbria. It rises to the west of the hamlet of Near Orrest and runs for 3 km (1.8 miles) before draining into Lake Windermere at Millerground Landing. the ground it rises in is 200m above sea leval and drops to 40m above sea level which is the altitude of the surface of Lake Windermere. This steep section here at the National Trust's St Catherine's is just below 120m contour and is 825 m from the lake shore. There is also another steep section on the 50 m contour at Millerground which is also a National Trust land. Millerground is 1 km (0.6 miles) to the South-West of this location. Thats almost an average gradient of 1 in 11 between the two sites but of course the sections at Millerground and St Catherine's are a lot steeper.

This stream is with in the Lake District National Park in the north-west of England and is the largest of the English National Parks and the second largest in the United Kingdom. It includes nearly all of the Lake District.

The National Park was formed in 1951 to protect the landscape by restricting unwelcome change by industry or commerce. Almost all of the land in the Park is in private ownership. 3.9% of the land belongs to the Lake District National Park Authority. The National Trust owns some land of significant landscape value such as here. In common with all other National Parks in England, there is no restriction on entry to or movement within the park along public routes, but access to cultivated land is usually restricted to public footpaths.

The highest mountains in England are within the Park boundary.

The lakes and mountains combine to form impressive scenery. Farmland and settlement add aesthetic value to the natural scenery with an ecology modified by human influence for millennia and including important wildlife habitats.
