There is no other building like this in the world, and people in Oklahoma City love what was once known as "the church of tomorrow." Sadly, the congregation has dwindled to about 40 members (from a high of 3,000 when the church was built) and they are selling the 32-acre property and all of the buildings on it.

We found out last week that a potential new buyer is purchasing the property with the contingency that they won't have any problems demolishing this gleaming example of modernism. Although the campus has been on the National Register since 2011, that offers no protection when it comes to taking it down. An owner can get a demo permit approved and start demolishing it the next minute (as we saw happen with Founders Bank here last fall).

To ensure that doesn't happen again, the Okie Mod Squad has asked the City Council to declare the building a landmark, which means that any demo permit would have to go through a review process and public hearing before it could be demolished. After we made our plea, councilman Ed Shadid has agreed to make the motion to consider landmarking the building at the next meeting on Tuesday, March 12th. It appears that most of the council is more for owners' rights than preservation, but we are hoping to show them how much our community wants to save our important structures by hosting a rally to Save the Egg on March 6th.
