South Side of 35th Street between Dearborn and Federal

            Well within my memory, this location was no place to loiter, even if you were across 35th on IIT's side of the street. This was long before the 35th Street Rock Island Metra opened, and before that, there was no station on the Rock Island for the 9 miles between 87th/Gresham and LaSalle St. Station.

In the late '70's, a boy walking from the 35th St. Green Line station to a White Sox game at the old Comiskey Park with his family was shot and killed from an upper floor of the northernmost Stateway Gardens highrise, now demolished. Now, a Starbucks and a FedEx office, among other upscale retailers, stand at that corner, surrounded by upper middle class residences. I never thought I'd see that kind of transformation in my lifetime.
