Namibia: The Dead Vlei, Sossusvlei dunes ... tree macro

            ... macro.  The Dead Vlei is an iconic spot in the massive Sossusvlei Dune system.  The Dead Vlei or clay pan was formed when the Tschaub river flooded ... pools of water supported camel thorn trees ... when the climate changed and sand dunes encroached the trees died.  They are reckoned to be around 900 years old.  They are not petrified but do not decompose because it is so dry
