This tintype photograph was purchased at the 47th Annual Antiques and Uniques Festival, Saturday, July 14, 2018, Craftsbury, Vermont. I believe this child was Eva Jennie Holt, wife of Ray Storrs Dowe, and daughter of Peyton and Jennie C. Sterling Holt.

From The Manchester Journal, November 1, 1877, under the column heading "Londonderry".

Mr. and Mrs. Peyton Holt had an addition to their family, Oct. 20, by a daughter weighing nine pounds.

I found Eva, age 2, in the 1880 census, in Windham County, Londonderry, Vermont with her father, Peyton, a tinsmith, mother Jennie, and a brother, Frank H., age 7.

The November 27, 1897 Burlington Free Press ran this item under the column heading "Northfield".

Announcement is made of the engagement of Miss Eva J. Holt, teacher in the graded school to Ray Storrs Dowe, mail clerk, between Woodstock and Plymouth, N. H. Mr. Dowe is a graduate of Norwich university and well known here.

I next found Ray S. and Eva J. Dowe In the 1900, Grafton County, Woodstock, New Hampshire census. Illinois-born Ray, age 27, was listed as "R. R. Mail Clerk". Eva, age 22, was listed as a teacher. They had been married two years.

The 1910 census brought big changes to the family. Ray and Eva were listed under the name of Dow in Middlesex County, Medford, Massachusetts. Ray was still working as a Railway Mail Clerk. With them were their two sons, Donald H., age 9, born in New Hampshire, and Neal R., age 5, born in Vermont.

The Dowe family was still in Medford in the 1920 census, but had moved from Adams St. to Boston Avenue. Besides being ten years older, everything was the same except for the addition of a daughter, Massachusetts-born Elsie M., age 2 years, 11 months.

According to the 1930 Medford census, the Dowe sons had moved out, and Eva's parents, Peyton and Jennie Holt, had moved in. The 1940 census found Ray, Eva, and Elsie Dowe in Pinellas County, Clearwater, Florida, where Ray was listed as a retired Railway Mail Clerk. It appears they moved to Ludow, Vermont, before retiring in Florida.

Eva moved back to Vermont after Ray died in 1957. She died in Castleton, Vermont, in 1968, and is buried in Troy, New York.
