The Burqa

The burqa is an outer garment worn in some ultraconservative muslim societies to hide a female's body when out in public. The garment is all enveloping and loose and covers the entire body including the hands and face with vision possible only through a mesh in front of the face.

The Russians outlawed burqas in Central Asia in the mid 19th century when much of the area came under their protection. The burqa seen in this photo is worn by a model and is of the "Uzbek style". In the minds of several Uzbek women I spoke to, Russia's great legacy in their country was the abolition of slavery and the burqa and increased access to education for the general population.

Wearing a burqa greatly limits a woman's ability to interact with other individuals, making it difficult to recognize and be recognized by friends and most notably, by her own children when in public. Peripheral vision is limited and central vision is blurred and distorted. The garment is clumsy and cumbersome leading to increased accidents and falls and an inability to run and escape if necessary. Burqas are very heavy and hot causing fatigue for the wearer. Medical studies have also shown that the lack of exposure to sun caused by wearing burqas has caused rickets in infants born to such women because of low vitamin D levels in their breast milk.
