Sunday sunrise. - a photo on Flickriver

Sunday sunrise.

            Early morning and it's -2C in the small dying western Queensland town of Mitchell. This is its railway station. The line used to run west out to Charleville and then split to Cunnamulla and Quilpie which is where my Mum hales from. The Cunnamulla line is now closed and the Quilpie line mothballed, gathering weeds. Probably to never run again. So the line west of Miles now only sees a rare grain train, two Westlanders (passenger trains) a week and cattle trains from Morven just east of Charleville. Trucks now take all produce and human needs to the west. 

One day it will all close because it will be deemed far too expensive to maintain the remaining 270 kilometres of track west of Miles for the few passengers and cattle offering. Very sad! It was once a reasonably busy railway, vital for these remote communities. 

But it was a glorious sunrise at Mitchell.

This shot of course looks to the east and Brisbane, the Westlander's final destination on the coast. The last train passed through the previous night and at the time the photo was shot (in winter), it would be just a few hours out of Brisbane. It's Sunday so the next train to Brisbane won't pull in until Wednesday!
