31316 March Hundred Road - a photo on Flickriver

            After many attempts to upload this print, I've at last come up with a near acceptable scan. It had badly degraded and wasn't taken in ideal conditions. 
31 316 had a very northern pedigree, it was originally D5850 and spent almost all its life allocated to various northern depots, being part of the Sheffield area scheme when introduced. Having said that, it was far from uncommon at March as Tinsley Class 31s were a regular sight on incoming workings such as the Mansfield - Whitemoor coal trains. 
31 316, which was photographed in the week before it was transferred from Tinsley to York was destined to feature in the ETH conversion programme in 1984/5 when it re-emerged after a heavy general overhaul as 31446. Whilst far from being the most exhilarating performer in its new guise, it was extremely reliable !
