31117 & 37018 Whitemoor Junction - a photo on Flickriver

            In this photograph taken from Norwood Road bridge at March, the sprawl of Whitemoor Yard is visible behind the trailing locomotive, Screened by the line of trees is March diesel depot. 
The elder is in bloom on 20th June 1980 as shortly before 2pm, Old Oak Common based 31117 gives Immingham's 37018 a tow eastbound. My notes say the pair were bound for Stratford.
 
31117 was given a depot repaint in 1979 and for a time didn't carry any BR arrow symbols, here though the previous symbol is beginning to show through. The loco number is in a larger than standard font and at this time the loco had only been modified with a steel plate instead of gangway doors at the No. 2 end (leading), retaining doors at the No. 1 cab. It eventually went through works in August 1981 when it lost these non-standard features. 
As D5535 it was allocated to Norwich for most of its early career. It then became one of the first of its type to be allocated to the Western Region in 1968 after having its Mirrlees power unit replaced by the EE version.  It sustained collision damage in 1986 and was dismantled in 1988. 
I have now rescanned this photo from the negative with a slightly better result. 6.3.13
