World Heritage: Belém Tower I - a photo on Flickriver

(Portuguese: Torre de Belém)
The tower was constructed by Francisco de Arruda around 1514 to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus river. It is a reminder of the great maritime discoveries of that time that laid the foundations of the modern world. It is also a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style of architecture.
