Wooden bridge from around 1830-35, designed by Alois Negrelli

            This wooden bridge crosses the small river Subersach, which flows in a very deep and narrow valley, and joins the villages of Lingenau and Grossdorf, now part of Egg in the Bregenzer Wald.

Alois Negrelli, Ritter von Moldelbe, was born in 1799 as Luigi Negrelli in Fiera di Primiero, in Trentino (then part of the Austrian Empire) and  died 1858 in Vienna. 
Alois Negrelli was a skilful and successful engineer and railroad pioneer in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. 
Luigi Negrelli studied in Feltre and Padua. After beginning his career in the province of Tyrol, he lived for some time in Vorarlberg, Austria. Moving into Switzerland in 1832, he then built the first Swiss railroad from Zurich to Baden. He also built the Münsterbrücke (munster bridge) and Kornhaus in Zürich together with Ferdinand Stadler who was responsible for the carpentry. 
The Negrelli Viaduct, is after the Charles Bridge, the second oldest still existing bridge over the river of Vltava in Prague. Its construction was requested by continuation of North state trunk road from Prague to Dresden. The railway viaduct spans over the valley of Karlín, a non-regulated flood area at that time, and two branches of Vltava, which are divided by the lower part of the Island of Štvanice.

Negrelli returned to working for Austria in 1840, and until 1857 was inspector for the Austrian railways. He then moved to Veneto-Lombardy, with the task of overseeing public buildings, railways and telegraph lines construction, and traffic on river Po. 

Delegate for the Habsburg monarchy in the international commission studying the feasibility of cutting through the isthmus of Suez, he started as early as 1836 to design the plans for the Suez Canal, which was built after his death by the “Compagnie universelle du canal maritime de Suez”  under the direction of the French manager Ferdinand de Lesseps from 1859-1869.
