Chipmunk at the window - a photo on Flickriver

            A Eutamias sibiricus (En: Siberian chipmunk, Fr: Tamia) posing nicely in a hole in a tree trunk. Taken in Forêt de Soignes, Bruxelles, Belgium. Near Les Enfants Noyés (the place of the drowned children).

This was taken very late evening with the sun setting (and given the trees, the light had been lost some time ago). I was giving up for the day for the nth time, only to startle this fellow into a hole in the tree (actually interconnected - there was an even smaller one further up it could just poke its little snout out of). So I had to hang around a bit more to see if I could make something of it despite the very poor light.

Because it was so dim, and I had no tripod/monopod/branch/tree to steady things, I took this 1/15s shot by throwing myself to the ground and doing my best to steady the camera body on the ground (basically pushing it into the dirt) and steadying it with hands as best as I could - the lens is pointing almost straight up. So still really not ideal, but taking enough frames got me some I could use. Trying to shoot handheld would have been night on impossible, and pushing the ISO through the roof would have been unlikely to yield as usable a result. 6400 is high already, but for handheld I likely would be needing beyond 25600.

This one was fairly content to watch me, but made the occasional foray out onto the trunk before darting back inside. Needless to say, extremely cute.
