HMS Warrior Stern Chaser - a photo on Flickriver

            HMS Warrior was equipped with ten of these Armstrong 110lb breech-loading guns. This particular gun was mounted on brass sliders at the rear of the ship which allowed it to be traversed to fire at any ship broadly on the Warrior's stern.

These guns were revolutionary at the time of installation. Still requiring an 18-man crew as the muzzle loading guns did, they were however rifled to give much greater accuracy at distance - up to 4,500 yards. 

Technically the guns fired a bullet as the charge was not integral. The bullet had a lead lining that engaged with the rifling in the barrel to bring it to a stop and allow the charge to be rammed home behind it. The breech was then sealed by rotating a screw prior to firing. Unfortunately, the guns could only fire around five shots before becoming so hot that the lead melted in the barrel, meaning it could not engage the rifling. Had they ever been fired in anger however, their five shots per gun would have decimated any ship afloat at the time - not to mention the impact of the twenty-six 68lb muzzle-loaders!
