            Fraser Island – Lake Mckensie

It’s always difficult to see which people will look good on photos. First they need to be physically compatible with the camera but even more important I’ve noticed they need to be able to work with the person behind the camera to create that perfect shot. Looking good on a photo is not as easy as many think and you need to be able to let loose and play along with the photographer as well as make poses that look natural. 

Anna was one of those naturals and fortunately for me she was in my Fraser 4W group. When we got to the absolutely stunningly beautiful Lake McKenzie we took a whole series of photos of her in the water and there were a lot of keepers among them, this picture is among my favorites. The way her hair spreads out in the water and the color of the water changing in the background, makes her look just like a mermaid taking a bask in the sun reading her book.

We just came back from a 3 day 4W drive on Fraser Island just of the coast of Hervey Bay. This is an incredible island with loads of different biotopes and scenery that takes your breath away. We went with a company called Palace Adventures and even though they didn’t have the fanciest cars in the world they were more than enough and the price was good compared to many others. Best of all we came in a really good group and I think that in the end that’s what’s most important. I spoke to some other people that were in the same kind of car but another group and even though they liked Fraser they didn’t like the trip all that much because the group simply didn’t work together all that well.

Fraser only has a few short strips of asphalted roads, everything else is hardcore of road sand roads. The beaches are state highways that you have to share with landing aircraft on certain strips. I’m not certain of all of its history but I know that the Aborigines lived here first and were driven of by the white men when they came. We visited a place called “Indian Head” that is a large hill with a fall of 100m to the ocean. One of the aborigines I spoke to said that there had been a massacre there where they forced the aborigines up and told them to jump or be shot. Since Aborigines can’t commit suicide they had to push their own brothers, sisters and parents over the rock. Apparently there were a lot of atrocities carried out here in Australia that you don’t hear about in the tourist brochures any more. Another interesting thing I learned about the Aborigines is that at night you can’t whistle or spit in the fire. Whistling reminds them of a bird that whistles at night when somebody has died and we don’t want to tamper with that. And the spitting is because they believe everything has a living soul, and spitting in the fire is disrespectful to that soul.

This photo is from Lake McKensie where the water is as clear as in a swimming pool! The sand is just as white as in Whitehaven beach on Whitsundays and the surroundings are beautiful, a must to visit if you ever go to Fraser!
