            For a relatively simple cloth doll, I like to make the patterns from freezer paper.  The pattern is a template, with no seam allowances on it.  

You cut out the pattern, then press it with a hot iron to your doubled  fabric, leaving enough space between pattern pieces to accomodate a 1/8 to 1/4 inch seam allowance around all pieces.  

After pressing the pattern pieces on, I pin the doubled fabric together in several places so it won't shift when I cut the pieces apart and sew the seams.  

Rough cut the larger pieces apart, to make it easier to sew, then stitch right along the edge of the pattern piece.  This is a very accurate way to stitch the doll, especially around the neck and head.

On the pattern piece above you can see two important things; I've laid one of the body pieces at 90 degrees to the other two.  This is to demonstrate that it really does make a difference, even with woven material, which way you lay the pattern pieces.

Woven material has a small amount of stretch in the direction perpendicular to the selvage edge.  You can see this yourself by stretching the fabric.  The two bodies in the same direction are laid with the maximum stretch running from the top of the body to the bottom.  The odd-girl-out has the maximum stretch running from side to side.  When I stuff these bodies, you'll be able to see what a difference this small amount of stretch makes.

The second important thing is the neck darts.  Mark these on both the front and back of the body, after you have sewn the body seams,  Cut out the body piece, pull off the freezer paper pattern (you can reuse this many times) and 'pull' the back away from the front.  Fold the dart and stitch one in the front and one in the back.
