First tube of Lincoln Tunnel in service, 1938 press photo

            Port Authority of New York (PANYNJ) press photo of newly opened Lincoln Tunnel in service with single tube (present center tube) in operation shortly after opening in December 1937. The initial single tube (with two-way traffic) built between 1934 and 1937 cost $85 million, backed by "New Deal" WPA assistance, including credit loans toward construction. The north tube for westbound traffic was included in original plans and began construction in 1937 (due to be in service 1940), but was partially completed in 1938 and mothballed, with work resuming in 1941 (opened February 1945).
