Western Mudsnake (Farancia abacura reinwardtii)

On a particularly hot, sunny day weeks into a drought in Southern Missouri, a friend and I found ourselves exploring a slough fed by a stream running through a deciduous forest. In the open woods, there was an abundance of shallow water over leaf packs, with many fallen logs around the perimeter of the slough. After kicking up a siren and mud turtle, this snake was flipped under a large, saturated log half in the water. As I rolled the log the snake took off from underneath into the muck, but I was able to grab it before it escaped. Upon capture it spiraled and poked me with the tip of it's tail defensively.
