Future 'Renaissance' cars, Ottawa, Ontario (2000)

            These coaches were built by the former Metro-Cammell (Washwood Heath, Birmingham) for the planned 'Nightstar' overnight service through the Channel Tunnel, serving destinations in the UK much further than London, including Scotland. The project, however, was subsequently deemed uneconomical and cancelled in July 1997. 

In 2000, VIA Rail Canada acquired three vehicles for evaluation and in December of that year purchased the remaining 136. After much modification, especially to meet Canadian disability requirements, VIA's new 'Rennaissance' fleet entered service in June 2002. The original 'Nighstar' fleet consisted of 72 sleepers, 47 coaches, and 20 service cars. After purchase, VIA rebuilt 15 of the sleepers into dining and baggage cars. Thirty-three carriages were not put into service, remaining in store at Thunder Bay, Ontario.
