The Galop Canal is the historic predecessor to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Opened in 1846, the Galop Canal ran 12 kilometers allowing ships to bypass rapids around Point Iroquois.

Canada Steamship Lines began in Canada East in 1845, operating river boats on the Saint Lawrence River. Subsequent growth over the years was tied to expansion of the canal system on the upper St. Lawrence River (the precursor to the Saint Lawrence Seaway).
