5 UP “American Flags”, Cliff, Tehachapi, California

            5 UP "American Flag" locos transverse the winding tracks at Cliff with a Mixed Consist. Another working can been seen in the distance entering Caliente, which is only a mile away as the crow flies but some 6 miles distant by rail. 

Union Pacific added the flag shortly after 9/11 at the suggestion of an employee and they are the only railroad to carry the American flag on its locomotives. In July 2022 UP announced the introduction of a revised scheme which would portray a modified decal flag in front of the side reporting numbers.
