Fort Casey - Ten-inch Rifle - a photo on Flickriver

            This ten-inch gun represents one-half of Battery Worth at U.S. Army Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, Washington.

This gun, seen in its firing position, is mounted on a disappearing carriage allowing the gun to remain concealed until the moment it fires.  This gun was able to fire a 570 pound projectile a distance of over eight miles.  You could raise some real hell with one of these!

A giant counterweight raised the gun above the concrete walled earthwork, and the force of the gun's own recoil retracted the gun while raising the counterweight.

The guns at Fort Casey were never fired in anger.  Now they make up part of a Washington State Park and kids play on them.

Unless you're 122 years old, the U.S. Military has been on Whidbey Island for longer than you have.

This photo has not been edited in any way at all.  It came straight out of my Ricoh GRII just as we see it here.
