Strada Consolare delle Gallie - a photo on Flickriver

Questo e' un tratto di 221 m., intagliato nella roccia, della strada Consolare Romana conosciuta come via delle Gallie, che ad Aosta si divideva in due rami, uno proseguiva verso la Svizzera attraverso il passo del Gran San Bernardo, l'altro saliva al Piccolo San Bernardo e poi scendeva in Francia..
Gli scalpellini in questo tratto asportarono 20000 metri cubi di roccia.L'arco fu costruito tra il 31 e il 25 a.C.La strada e' piuttosto alta rispetto il fiume Dora, che probabilmente a quei tempi esondava fino a lambirla.
Il pilone che si vede in questa foto ed e' ingrandito sotto, porta la scritta XXXVI miglia romane ( un miglio romano sono 1480 m, cioe' mille passi di 1,48 m) da Augusta Pretoria.
I solchi sono quelli lasciati dalle ruote dei carri. Lungo questa strada passarono i pellegrini diretti a Santiago di Compostela, o in Terra Santa o a Roma. Prima della costruzione della strada Consolare si ritiene che l'unica strada che attraversava la valle fosse stata costruita dai Salassi, ma a mezza costa, sul versante volto a sud. Esistono ancora svariati tratti attribuiti a loro.

Thsi is the Strada Consolare Romana named Via delle Gallie, who joined the roman Empire to what are now France and Swizerland, trought the Piccolo and Gran San Bernardo Pass. This part was done cutting the stones of the mountain left side by hand. Were cutted 20000 cube meters of stones; the arc was built between the 25 and the 31 bC, and you can see in the pavimentation the sign of the wheels that moved along the road.
Before the realisation of this road, there was another one, that is named via dei Salassi, probably built by this population, 300 meters of level up this one, in the mountain.
