Aspen Mountain Air Dornier 328 - a photo on Flickriver

               Aspen Mountain Air (not to be confused with the earlier Aspen Airlines) was created in 1996 as a subsidiary of Lone Star Airlines, itself owned by Exec Express.  Exec Express was originally founded in 1984 as part of the US government’s Essential Air Service plan, which provided low-cost air service to remote locations not served by major airlines.  Exec Express did well enough to expand through the American South, changing its name to Lone Star Airlines in 1988.  

   Aspen Mountain Air started after Lone Star was able to demonstrate that it could profitably and safely operate scheduled airline service into Aspen, CO—because of its high mountain location, Aspen was notoriously difficult to land at for anything larger than general aviation aircraft.  Aspen Mountain Air operated Dornier 328s, initially to Dallas-Ft. Worth and Denver, but also expanded its service to such diverse locations at Pensacola, FL and Bozeman, MT.  Lone Star’s rapid expansion proved its undoing, however, and it went bankrupt in 1998.  Aspen Mountain Air went with it, with most of the airline’s equipment being sold off to Air Wisconsin and Big Sky Airlines.
