The art of Ife flourished from about A.D. 800 to 1600.  It exhibited great technical excellence and artistic refinement. The artists of Ife developed a highly naturalistic sculptural tradition. This was translated into bronze and brass castings.  Bronze portrait heads and figures were produced to commemorate deceased kings and chiefs. 
Commemorative heads were displayed on alters at numerous shrines and in the royal palace. This head bears ancient tribal markings of fine lines engraved vertically down the face.
