Partington Cove, Central California Coast

            The trail along Partington Creek branches near the shore, the right branch leading to the rocky beach in the previous post. The left branch leads to this cove (separated from that beach by a rocky point extending out into the sea. The cove in the foreground allowed sailing vessels to access this isolated section of the Central Coast, and was used over the years for a variety of purposes. In the  first half of the 1800s, Russian fur hunters used the cove as they took part in the "California fur rush" that led to the near extinction of southern sea otters. Later in the century, John Partington and his workers loaded ships here with tanbark stripped from trees in the area (tanbark was used in the leather tanning industry). Decades later, in the first third of the 20th century, the cove had a role in the transport of materials to the area for the building of the Coastal Highway.
