After seizing Czechoslovakia in 1938, the Germans made considerable use of the excellent Czech armaments industry. The Munitionspanzer 38 (t) Ausf M was built as a tracked armored ammunition carrier on the chassis of old Czech-built 38t tanks. The SdKfz 138 was built specifically as the ammunition carrier for the Grille (Cricket) self-propelled 150 mm Infantry Gun. The Grille, built on the same obsolete tank chassis, was used as heavy fire support for Panzergrenadier (Armored / Mechanized Infantry) units. The Munitionspanzer 38 (t) was identical to the self-propelled gun it supported, except the gun was replaced by ammunition racks. Two SdKfz 138s were intended to accompany every six Grille SP guns. A total of 102 of these vehicles were built in 1944, and served on all fronts until the end of the war. It is painted in the standard three color camouflage (dark yellow, red-brown, and dark green) used by the German Army late in the war. This SdKfz 138 came here from the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 2011.
