Golden lion tamarin on the lookout - a photo on Flickriver

            Brazil's golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia), too golden lion marmoset, is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. 
The golden lion tamarin is a small, squirrel-sized monkey, about 20 - 33 cm long with a 32 - 40 cm long tail, weigh 450 to 800 gr. There is no sexual dimorphism. They have small, rounded heads adorned with a thick golden mane on the crown, cheeks, throat, ears and shoulders. Their bare faces are flat and have widely spaced nostrils. Their bodies are covered in long, soft silky hair with coloration ranging from pale golden to a rich reddish-gold. One interesting characteristic is that these tamarins have claws, not flattened fingernails.
About 1,000 golden lion tamarins live in the wild in the lowland tropical forest from sea level to 1,000 m in the Atlantic coastal region of southeastern Brazil. The living area (Poço das Antas Biological Reserve) is extremely limited to 154 square km. In captivity (zoos) lives about 500 animals.
Golden lion tamarins are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, insects, and small lizards.

Het gouden leeuwaapje of gewoon leeuwaapje (Leontopithecus rosalia) is een ernstig bedreigd klauwaapje. Het is de bekendste van de vier soorten leeuwaapjes. Hij komt enkel voor in een klein gebied in het ernstig versnipperde Atlantische regenwoud in het zuidoosten van Brazilië.
Het gouden leeuwaapje wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste apensoorten. Het diertje heeft een zijdeachtige, rossige goudgele vacht en manen, die de oren bedekt. Het gezicht is naakt en donker van kleur. Hij wordt 20 tot 33 cm lang en de staart is tussen de 33 en de 40 cm lang. Het lichaamsgewicht bedraagt 450 tot 800 gram. Ondanks dat dit kleine aapje niet veel groter is dan een eekhoorn is het toch een van de grotere soorten klauwaapjes.
Gouden leeuwaapjes foerageren voornamelijk overdag. Ze eten hoofdzakelijk sappige vruchten en scheuten. Ook jagen ze op insecten, spinnen en hagedisjes. Ook eten ze honing, gom en vogeleieren. Met zijn lange, dunne vingers en handen kan hij keverlarven en andere insecten vinden onder de bast of in boomspleten.
Sinds de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw is er een intensieve beschermingscampagne voor deze aapjes. Dit heeft geleid tot een wereldwijd fokprogramma in dierentuinen en een succesvol herintroductieproject. Veertig jaar geleden was de soort bijna uitgestorven. Nu leven er weer meer dan duizend gouden leeuwaapjes in het wild en circa 500 in dierentuinen.
