            Old (ware)houses and traditional boats along the quay “Hoge der A” (also: Hoge der Aa) along the river Aa in the Hanseatic city of Groningen, the Netherlands. 
In the background, the tower of the medieval A-church (also: Aa-church).
Groningen is a municipality and the capital city of the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. Groningen with approximately 190,000 inhabitants is a university city, inhabited on average by about 50,000 students.
The oldest document referring to Groningen's existence dates from 1040. However, the city already existed long before then: the oldest archaeological traces found are believed to stem from the years 3950 BCE–3720 BCE, although the first major settlement in Groningen has been traced back to the 3rd century CE.
