Wache Schloss Arenberg Brussel 1 Feb 1915

            Photo titled, "Wache Schloss Arenberg Brussel 1-2-1915. (Guard Watch Arenberg Castle Brussells 1 February 1915). The sender of the photo has identified himself with an X. Unfortunately the reverse side is blank. The Guard Detail are wearing mixed uniforms and equipment. They are armed with both Gewehr 98 and Gewehr 88/05 rifles.

Palais d'Arenberg, Egmont, Brussels  is a large mansion at the Wolstraat / Rue aux Laines and the Kleine Zavel / Petit Sablon Square in Brussels, Belgium. Today it houses the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Egmont Palace was built between 1548 and 1560 by Françoise of Luxembourg and her son, Lamoral, Count of Egmont, it's intended purpose was as the Egmont Hotel. Duke Leopold Philippe d'Arenberg acquired the hotel in 1738, and it was in that families possession at the time of this photo in 1915. At the end of World War I, the German Arenberg family was forced to sell the property to the city of Brussels.
