Blue Hole, Santa Rosa, NM - a photo on Flickriver

            The Blue Hole is an artesian spring that was formed a few thousand years ago.  It is 81 feet deep and the water is crystal clear.  It has a pretty large water flow of 3,000 gallons per minute.

It is a popular diving location in New Mexico.  You are required to have a permit to dive here with scuba gear.  When you walk up to the area, you will see signs warning you about getting the bends from coming up out of the water to fast. The cave system actually goes down to 190 feet, but they have blocked off access to that depth because of the dangers of the cave walls.

I saw a young man jump in off of the diving platform and he was amazed at how clear the water was.  There is supposed to be 100 feet of visibility in the  hole. There is also a really nice public water park nearby that is open to the public.  I think the water comes from this same system.  It was an interesting stop on my road trip to visit my family.
